WHALE WATCHING

Whale Watching in South Africa's Garden Route

The Whale Watching in Hermanus occurs from September through November. By October, the Southern Right Whales peak in the Walker Bay area where they mate and calve. Other species of whales seen between September to December include Humpback Whales, Brydes Whales - and ocassionally, also Killer Whales. The bay additionally offers frequent sightings during this season of endemic Dolphin species such as the Heavisides dolphin, Bottlenose dolphin and Common dolphin. Another local attraction is the World's first Whale Crier, keeping all informed on the whereabouts of the whales with the sound of his kelp horn - asound that is the charming characteristic of the sleepy seaside resort of Hermanus during the whaling season.

FINE ART IN HERMANUS

A picturesque 5 mile walk from Birkenhead House winds through the cliffs into the centre of Hermanus town, offering a perfect opportunity to take in the sights of the floral and ocean scenery. On arrival relax with a refreshing drink at the seaside cafés overlooking the sea and stroll into the many shops and galleries to experience a truly local flavor of the South African countryside. The walk is approximately an hour and a half and once you're ready to head back to Birkenhead, the house will arrange for you to be picked from town by their chauffeur and brought home for a splendid dinner.

AWARD-WINNING PINOT NOIR

The boutique wine estate of Hamilton Russell is one of the Southern-most wineries in Africa, producing some of the world's best Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The Birkenhead House can arrange for a private guided tour of the vineyards as well as a personal tasting at the estate. Neighboring Hamilton Russell is also the Bouchard Finlayson estate that produces many varietals, including an award-winning Pinot Noir of their own.
